Public X12 material can help you recognize the shape of a 271. The licensed 005010X279A1 implementation guide contains the complete grammar, code lists, and situational requirements. The public X279 product page identifies the 270/271 transaction pair and explains how to obtain the guide.
What the public material shows
Section titled “What the public material shows”The 005010 X279 examples include
interchange, hierarchy, subscriber, dependent, and AAA cases. X12 Requests
for Interpretation answer narrower questions. For example, RFI 2821
discusses benefit information and request validation, while RFI 1585
discusses acknowledgment handling for multiple interchanges.
Use those sources for the cases they describe. They omit many transaction rules and code choices.
Which source answers which question
Section titled “Which source answers which question”- The local example files show the segments discussed in this guide.
- Public X12 examples and RFIs explain specific published cases.
- A payer or clearinghouse guide gives instructions for its connection.
- X279A1 defines the transaction requirements.
An example can clarify a rule, but it cannot demonstrate every valid 271. A companion guide adds local instructions to the base transaction.
